What you have to explain here is that the entire episode was about Maggie believing that her dead boyfriend, Rick, had been reincarnated as a dog.
Ben was wandering around the room playing with his toys while we were watching this, and didn’t really seem to be paying attention. Suddenly, without any prompting he stated, “The dog is not Rick!”
Obviously he was paying much more attention than we gave him credit for.
