I have noticed another disturbing new installer trend. I have previous posts about problems with progress indicators.

More and more, installers are initiating a reboot as the final phase of installation. You may be thinking that this isn’t new. But more than one installer just does the reboot without telling me that it’s happening or even asking for permission. As a result, my workflow is interrupted.

A full reboot of my Windows desktop takes about ten minutes. This is counting the time to shut down and for the hardware to POST. If there are updates to install, it takes even longer. Then I have to wait for my user login, which is very slow as well.

I want to be in absolute control of when my system reboots. These installers take that choice away from me. I understand that software installs sometimes require reboots. I want installers to inform me that a reboot is required. And it must allow me to skip the reboot and do it later.

The current behavior is very unacceptable, and I find it very hard to believe that developers are unaware that their installers are violating user trust.
